Broadwing Hawk

Buteo platypterus

Description:

Broad-wingeds are small buteo hawks with a body length of between 35 to 45 cm (13 to 18 in); wingspan is 80 to 100 cm (32 to 40 in). Adults have dark brown upper parts and evenly spaced black and white bands on the tail. Females are larger than males. Immatures are similar but with thinner bands on tail.

Habitat:

Forested areas.

Thanks. The broad-wings really like this tree in our backyard. There is a nest nearby in the forest below our house, but I wasn't able to find it this summer. The last several years I was able to find it, although it was well-hidden in leafy trees so no opportunity for photography. But they hunt our yard frequently from this tree. This bird, however, is one I don't recognize and I suspect that this is a migrant passing through.
