Hard and brownish. About 8 inches across. The top was sort of crusty.
Forest, growing near the bottom of a conifer.
I see them quite often in Saugerties, almost always on a dead hemlock, this specific one seems to be at the end of its life. Can be made into a tea, apparently it has some great properties to it!
