Pacific Tent Caterpillar

Malacosoma constrictum

Description:

Black body with blue markings. Orange tufts down back and white tufts on sides. From the Lackey Moths. After the eggs hatch they create a silken tent for shelter on branches of the host tree. The will moult during the daytime and come out of the tent to feed at night. The can cause heavy defoliation of Aspens and Willows to growth loss or death of the trees.

Habitat:

Spotted on a dirt trail.
