Bark grows in small blocks. The trunk grows in a crazy form, as seen in second pic (center tree.) Can be confused with sassafras, which is redder.

Great Smoky Mountains Nat'l Park

Bees collect nectar from the flowers for honey. Winter Woody Tree ID class.
