Leaf Cutter Ant Turrets

Description:

These turrets were relatively close together and covered an area of about 10 square meters. The turrets were up to 16 cm in height. The ants were small and red (Leaf Cutter Ants, Atta mexicana?) and were not active. The holes inside the turrets were choked with ants waiting.

Habitat:

Parking area of the Zoomat in Tuxtla Gutierrez, Chiapas, Mexico at about 350 meters elevation. The Zoomat is in a natural forest area above the city.

Notes:

These turrets are probably the ventilation shafts of the Leaf Cutter Ant (possibly Atta mexicana), see this very neat documentary video: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/a...
