looks like brain coral
dead log, temperate forest
I've seen so many cool and interesting fungi but this was the first time I have seen this species. It's become one of my favorites.I don't see any close matches in the Audubon mushroom fieldguide.

Thanks lipase. It seemed to be in the process of something. I don't know if it would open all the way up but it might. Thanks for searching shebe, this had the texture of thin rubber, so it was a bit soft. It must be something pretty rare.
maybe it will 'open' up and turn into something like dyers mazegill!? the pores look similar and the brown bits look like the top of some bracket fungi
Were they stiff or soft? Looks like it could be some relative of the cup fungi, but darned if I can find anything close to it in the dozen or so books I've looked at. I've never foraged in the midwest, so they could be common as dirt there & I wouldn't know :)
that looks awesome good photos as well
Wow, it must be really unique then!
That is pretty unique! In my 40 years of looking, I've never seen one either.
