Mountain goat

Oreamnos americanus

Description:

I spotted this mountain goat in the summer on August the 5th 2010 in Glacier National park, Montana. Bighorn sheep share the same environment and sometimes fight with the Mountain goats. They have a predator/prey relationship with cougars. They use Sexual reproduction and often both genders have many mates throughout the breeding season. A mountain goat’s hooves have many features which help them climb: Hard edges for grip, soft pads in the middle for traction, and claws on the end that work as brakes. They also grow thick second coat during the winter season to stay warm. They shed it in the summer. They can vary in size and weight and the males typically weigh more. They also can have different horn sizes, the biggest being the oldest.

Habitat:

It lives from mountains in the northwestern United States all the way to Alaska, usually in snowy places that are around 6000 feet high. Most of their food consists of grass, shrubs, and pretty much any plants they can find. In captivity they will eat fruits and vegetables. Cougars and lynx are its main predators, but avalanches are far more dangerous for the mountain goats. They climb, eat, and mainly don't interact with any other animals.
