Flambuoyant Cuttlefish

Metasepia pfefferi

Description:

Flambuoyant Cuttlefish are one of the most colorful of the cuttle fish family. They are small in size, adult is around 8-10 cm in size, with the Females much bigger than the Males. The Flambuoyant Cuttlefish is the only known specie in the family to 'walk' on the sea bottom although they can 'float' for short distance. They are master of camouflage, especially when at rest, keeping to mostly brown/grey/white colors to blend with the surroundings. When moving and hunting, they flash their flambuoyant colors - yellow/pink/purple/brown/grey/black. The muscle tissues of this cuttle fish are highly toxic and its toxin is nearly as lethal as the Blue-Ringed Octopus. Pic#2 shows the Flambuoyant Cuttlefish hunting a small Glass Fish. They hunt by sticking out their proboscis, which is nearly as long as their body, and has a stick end. The action of this can be very fast and difficult to take picture of.

Habitat:

Shallow tropical waters among sandy and coral rubbles.

Notes:

The location map shows it is in Indonesia, but Mabul Island is in Malaysia
