Omophoita sp
All through the rainy season I viewed hundreds of these beetles. They have 10 spots. They measure about 3/8" long. I see them on a wide variety of plants...Bougainvillea, Hibiscus, Coconut Palms, etc.
Tropical dry forest in NW Costa Rica 4 months into the 6 month rainy season.
I posted one a couple months ago and got admonished for the 10 spots instead of the 8...I have been looking and waiting for someone to come up with something better. Don't lose any sleep over this. I already put Omophoita sp.
I just realized the ten points, but I think it's a weird variation of Omophoita, I've wasted a lot of time on research looking for any omophoita of ten spots, but there's none! I saw a lot of variations, bugs of 7, and 9 spots, but the species is the called the same despite the number of spots. Hope I help you! :)
I am pretty sure it is a flea beetle, Alticinae and I can't imagine it is another genus than Omophoita, however, these 10 points could make me sleepless. I would take Omophoita sp. and try to get more infos about the missing 2 points...
The varipennis came from the same group that I have been shooting these past six months on the same plants. I took the I.D. from one that we worked on a couple months back. Are you sure that it is the 8 spot because this one has 10 spots....11 including the one on the head. Could it just be a difference in geographical distribution?
My window was open for too long! Yes, really 10 spots!!?? Rats... Is there any 10-spotted Omophoita around??? OK, I withdraw my confirmed comment...
Confirmed! Philipp was faster, I was checking the color of your Varipennis Grasshopper. Varipennis is usally more greenish and yellowish, whereas Reticulata is more aubergine or dark violet/grayish. Can't judge it from your picture.
Hi Phillip. Thanks for your spotting suggestion. This beetle has 10 spots. They are likely both Omophoita but I am not sure about the cyanipennis species.
