Harlequin Duck

Histrionicus histrionicus

Notes:

More than half of eastern North American population of Harlequin Ducks winters in coastal Maine, particularly outer reaches of Penobscot and Jericho bays. When engaged in behavioral interactions, the Harlequin Duck gives distinctly unducklike squeaks, the source of one of its local names: sea mouse. (Cornell)

Thanks Fyn. I haven't seen that Peterson guide yet, I'll have to look for it.

Thanks Joan and Ashley. Besides being beautiful, Harlequin Ducks are just fun to watch at the edge of the waves breaking onto the rocks.
