long-legged fly - male

Heteropsilopus cingulipes

Description:

A delicate fly with metallic green thorax and bronze abdomen. Prominent eyes with long antennal aristae (pic#4). The last segments of the abdomen appeared tucked-in suggesting that this fly is male. Wings were clear. The right haltere (reduced and modified hind wing) is visible in the photos.

Habitat:

Spotted sitting on a leaf of a broad-leaved eucalyptus tree

Notes:

The female fly appears to have a stouter abdomen There is still some confusion about the species of this dolichopodid fly however, according to Atlas of Living Australia, this is the species seen around Victorian suburbs. http://www.lochmantransparencies.com/p59...
