Dictyophorus spumans
Beautifully colored grasshopper. Bright red with black bands.
Indigenous to South Africa. It grows up to a length of 80 millimetres (3.1 in), and is toxic due to its diet of milkweed.
This grasshopper was crossing the road, and stayed for a photo shoot. Fun!

I certainly felt no need to touch this bright red beauty Keith. ;)
Just like the Monarch Butterfly that eats milkweed, it has bright warning colors
Thank you Johan! How lucky we were it just happened to cross the road!
Hi Dez, It might also be is an immature Common Milkweed Locust (Pg94 no 4)

How amazing is that! I hope to see one on my next visit to Cape Point! Thanks Jolly!
Yes. Grasshoppers undergo incomplete metamorphosis which means nymphs and adults looks similar. Here is the adult: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Dictyo...
Thank you Jolly and Luis. Is it a nymph because of smaller wings?
Fantastic series. Beautiful red grasshopper nymph.
