Mexican Lyre Snake

Trimorphodon tau tau

Description:

Small snake of about 30cm in length, which should make this specimen a juvenile. The head features a pale snout, an interocular pale band, and another one behind the head; the V-shaped marking gives this genus the common name, resembling a lyre. Body is light greyish brown with dark bands; these bands have orange/brown markings and a white outline.

Habitat:

Found in 'El Cimatario', a national park in semi-arid area just outside Querétaro, after some heavy rain at the end of the rainy season.

Notes:

Locally known as 'Víbora de uña', these colubrid snakes are rear-fanged and venomous, but not harmful to humans. The genus contains two species and seven subspecies.

Congratulations Felix, your Mexican Lyre Snake is our Spotting of the Day:

"This beautiful Mexican Lyre Snake (Trimorphodon tau tau) is our Spotting of the Day! This snake takes its common name from the V shaped pattern on its head resembling the shape of a lyre, well visible on this image. Trimorphodon is a genus of mildly venomous, rear-fanged, colubrid snakes comprising two species and seven subspecies. The genus name is a combination of three Greek words: 'tri' - three, 'morph' - shape, and 'odon' - teeth. This refers to the three distinct kinds of teeth that lyre snakes have: recurved anterior teeth; shorter middle teeth, and large grooved fangs at the rear".
