Adoretus sinicus
Rust-colored beetle covered with beige hair, body ~ 12 mm long. No observable antennae. From more than a few cm away it appears light brown.
Suburban neighborhood on tropical upland plateau.
Spotted resting on screen door. It flew away when disturbed. It looks similar to a beetle species that liked the leaves of my cucumber plants some years ago. I believe this individual may be of the same species, and responsible for some of the herbivory I've noticed recently on a local wiliwili tree.
stho002: Thanks for the ID. I agree and have edited the spotting accordingly.
Also known as Chinese rose beetle, see:

Good luck with it then. Looks like a furry scarabaeidae of some kind but it's interesting about the antennae. Maybe tucked under? We have some hairy scarabs in Aus. http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/122...
Mark: I agree. However, casual research indicates that deathwatch beetles are about 50% the size of this spotting. Also, I've been unable to find a source which states explicitly that deathwatch beetles are found in Hawaii. On the other hand, I can personally attest to the fact that wood borers of some kind exist here. I caught one, years ago, before Project Noah, before my scientific side began to manifest itself, so I've no photo to share.
