spittle shelter

Family Aphrophoridae

Description:

Clumps of white spittle on the branches of an acacia bush. This clump appeared fresh with droplets. An unfortunate insect was seen stuck to the spittle ( pic #2)

Habitat:

Acacia

Notes:

This spittle is made by the nymphs of spittle bugs to protect themselves from either dehydration or predators. This bush had several such clumps of spittle. There was no sign of any insects on the tree. Some spittlebug nymphs shelter in tubes stuck to branches - these are tube spittlebugs.

Leuba. I have opened one and found two culprits inside.

I think the brown objects in pic #1 may be exuvia, or the insects themselves.
