Yoyetta abdominalis
A small plain brown cicada (24mm) goes through it's final moult to become a beautiful cream, pink, yellow and green adult for a short while.
Trunk of Eucalyptus microcarpa in suburban back yard..
I noticed a plain brown nymph cicada stop climbing and start arching it's back. The whole process took about 40 minutes. The wing expansion was impressive as it only took about 3 minutes. I didn't have time to capture the changing colours but this one would have gone mostly black. I'm not completely certain of the ID but there were several mature Y abdominalis higher up the trunk and many similar exuviae so it is by association. (not very scientific I know) Here's a link to a fully coloured adult I spotted on the same tree http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/164... Name changed from Cicadetta abdominalis

Thanks Ava. Yes the big back arch evokes some empathy for the task at hand.
