Giant-wood rail

aramides ypecaha

Description:

Giant wood-rails can commonly be seen near lagoons, lakes or near the sea in Uruguay. This one was spotted at Playa Penino, which is an important ecological reserve as many birds nest and migrate there. Loud motorbikes were driving around but this bird didn´t seem to bother. It is common to see them walking gently near the water. They eat fish, frogs, insects, seeds and fruit.

Habitat:

They live in the Neotropical zone, except Chile. They are commonly seen all around Uruguay's countryside, generally near water.
