Lamprotornis chalybaeus
Medium sized bird, some 25 cm in length, mainly glossy blue. The wing covers and the back are very glossy, giving away a green-bronzy hue. Below is blue. Eyes are yellow, and there is a dark blue ear-patch, running from the base of bill to ears. This patch helps to ID various blue starlings.
Seen in an acacia thicket close to village (and to river Awash) in Afar Region, a semi-desert region of Ethiopia, inhabited by a pastoral population of the same name. Otherwise, this a very common bird in Sahel, and Eastern and Southern Africa.
