Prickly Pear Cactus (with Cochineal)

Opuntia humifusa

Description:

With Cochineal Scale

Notes:

When I first spotted this I thought that a bird had been feasting and defecating on this cacti. After looking closer I realized that there was too much symmetry for this to be the case. I did a little research and found that the white is actually caused by a red bug called a Cochineal Insect! I'm not entirely sure if the bugs are underneath the white here or not. Anyone know more about this?
