Yellow-billed Magpie

Pica nuttalli

Description:

Although the Yellow-billed Magpie is common and conspicuous in the open oak woodlands of central and southern California, it is found nowhere else in the world.

Habitat:

orchards along the Sacramento River

Notes:

There is a lot of variation in the amount of yellow found around the eye in this species. It is one of the few birds that is endemic to California. The first photo, showing a bird in flight, is a bird that is afflicted with avian pox. The toes have large nodules on them. In the third photo, the bird is eating a persimmon fruit.
