Namaqua Dove

Oena capensis

Description:

Small and elegant, light-grey long-tailed dove. Male is easily recognized with black face, throat and chest, and a yellow-tipped red bill (Photo No 2 - that male escaped the focus a bit...) Female is all grey with brownish bill. Both sexes sport blackish wing spots and black-and-white bars on the back.

Habitat:

Common sub-Saharan species, found in arid and semi-arid savannah and open woodland. Here, observed on two separate occasions, close to agricultural fields and settlements, in acacia savanna of higher-ground parts of Somali Region of Ethiopia, around Jigjiga (the capital of the region).
