Snowy Owl

Bubo scandiacus

Notes:

This bird was at the Dead Creek Wildlife Management Area and was putting on quite a show. I watched it fly off its perch high up in a tree a couple times and land in the snowy field. Each time it would come back to the same tree in the parking lot where plenty of people were watching. It never even glanced at the people, even when there was movement and talking.

Thanks Mona and Manish. These owls blend in well with the snow and are really at home in the cold.

Emily and Ashley I hope you both have a chance to get a Snowy Owl this month. I'd love to see pictures from both of you of a nice Snowy!

Emily you need to road trip it and find one! One was reported in east Texas this morning, but the way the lady explained it didn't sound very convincing, sounds like it is probably a barn owl. But someone is going to check it out regardless. If it turns out to be one, I will be driving 8 hours on Sunday to go find it haha

Ashley and Tom, you are cracking me up! I of course feel the same way Ashley does...although there have been a few spottings of snowies in Colorado the last couple months, but they are way up North...I might have to take a road trip here before they head up North again! Tom the 3rd and 4th pics are my favorite! Fantastic you lucky devil!

Thanks Alice. The owl put on a great show and didn't care that people were around.

Both of those rails would be nice! They're rare up here and my only picture is a King Rail from North Carolina, and not that great of a shot.

Haha you would say things that are hard to find! I have King and Clapper rails, those do anything for you? ;)

Ashley, if you could come up with a Yellow Rail or a Black Rail, that would make me jealous, along with many others here!

I will be in North Carolina in June...snowies will be very far away then though lol. I need something I see all the time to make you jealous with haha

OK Ashley, you might just have to take a trip up here to get some Snowy pics:-)

You shouldn't be allowed to upload anymore snowies until one comes to Texas! You're killing me over here haha

Thanks John. This has been a great year in the northeast for Snowy Owls. One did make it to Jacksonville, Florida, but hasn't been reported since Jan 22.
