Description:

A spunky woodpecker characterized by a stark red patch on the back of the head and white polka dots on black wings, the Downy Woodpecker is the smallest woodpecker in Eastern North America. Similar species include Sphyrapicus varius and Picoides villosus.

Habitat:

Mixed deciduous/coniferous forests.
