Horned Lark

Eremophila alpestris

Description:

Brown on the back side and dark under tail. Light colored under with light brown patches on breast. Dark collar and mustache. Face and throat are a pale yellow. Small feather horns on the head.
Unlike the Horned Larks in the SF Bay area. These unsure if by habitat, season or subspecies were not in flocks but were single birds scattered in the desert. Occasionally I would see one or two fly over head and then low into the scrub. They also kept me at a distance. This and some others would perch on a bush to see.

Habitat:

desert of central western Nevada
