Highly variable plumage. Male generally has more brown than the Purple and Cassin's finch. The female (not shown here) is striped brown and beige with no red or orange.
Lively high-pitched song consists of 3 -note phrases, usually ends with a nasal wheer, Calls include a whistled wheat. Cities, towns, gardens, parks, pretty common everywhere in the west now.
