Grey Butcher Bird

Cracticus torquatus

Description:

Male is shades of grey and the female is brown

Habitat:

This feeding platform was refined over time and became a major bird spotting site with many species of bird using it. It ended up with many places the birds could view the area in safety. The spots where cats could hide were netted off and there was food and water on several levels. The bread was seen as a bad choice and very small amounts of more specialised foods were offered. Native birds are not big eaters and one bird actually became obese before I realised the danger of feeding them bread.

Notes:

The male in this spotting seemed to have radar for the camera. I tried for a year to get images of him and each time he either fluffed his feathers or turned just as I took a shot. The female would actually sit at my feet, on the back of a chair, or on that feeding table and we would sing to each other. I was housebound and very ill so she was a gift
