Eastern Bearded Dragon

Pogona barbata

Description:

Bearded Dragon is the common name for any agamid lizard in the genus Pogona. Information on this species can be found at one of my previous spottings in Laidley, QLD http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/221... This is a fully mature animal, and a very handsome one at that. Very well camouflaged against the tree bark.

Habitat:

Up a tree in my local park.

Notes:

Had I not seen this fellow out in the open whilst he was feeding on a lawn weed, I would have missed him completely. When I returned with my camera, he had already found safety in the tree. I didn't expect to find him there, and it is the first time I have ever seen a bearded dragon climb.

I don't think they've changed too much since prehistoric times. They look positively scary to view up close, what with all those spines and scales. This one was pretty relaxed and let me get quite close, and if it was spooked it would have flattened itself out... or done a runner.

Wow it looks prehistoric on the tree trunk.
