Japanese pygmy woodpecker

Dendrocopos kizuki

Description:

Small bird, about 10 cm. Black and white ladder back. Four toed - pair facing front and back.

Habitat:

This bird is resident of a swath of woods in a city park I like to haunt. Mixed deciduous trees - mainly sawtooth oaks.

Notes:

The light tapping sound and small "kiiiii" like a creaky door lets me know which tree to look at. Today I noticed that this individual has buddy. Mated pair?
