Buteo regalis
This is the largest of the Buteos and is often mistaken for an eagle due to its size, proportions, and behavior. As with all birds of prey, the female is larger than the male, but there is some overlap between small females and large males in the range of measurements. Length ranges from 20 to 27 inches (51 to 69 cm) with an average of 23 inches (58 cm), wingspan from 48 to 60 inches (120 to 150 cm) with an average of 56 inches (140 cm), and weight from 2.1 to 5 pounds (950 to 2,300 g).
Plains, forest.
Seeing a Ferruginous Hawk this close and in constant action was a real treat! In the first few pics the FEHA is plunging its talons into a gopher hole. There are many more photos I wish I could show you guys. However, there were and are many photographers that were walking right up to it while it was feeding, hunting, and otherwise, with no concern for the well being of the animal. It did not get to finish its meal and was scared away. I had to yell at some people for having disturbed it's feeding habits, etc. Animals need room. Don't be that person.

Fantastic series, Joshua! Ditto to Emily's comments...give them their space!! (I see you don't have it in the Raptor mission! too bad we can't have more missions!!) ;-)
Haha thanks everybody :) and thank you Alice, I'll have to remember that. but yeah i'm right there with you Emily. if an animal is just trying to get away from me then i just let it be. stressing out the animal is just not worth it.
Killer series!!! Love it!
I HATE it when photographers are more focused on their shots then the well being of the animal! Especially in fall and winter! When an animal is feeding, I try and give them plenty of space and let them eat in peace. My biggest fear when out shooting is that I will make an animal spend unnecessary energy trying to run away from me! If you love animals, it's just not worth the risk! Good on you for yelling at some of the other photographers!
Good advice, nice series, Perhaps a better way to put it, is to ask if they like their personal space
Really nice series.
Thanks so much guys!
