I bow to bayucca's superior knowledge, and I'm most happy as I now have an ID for another caterpillar from my garden which I shall be posting later
There are two Hippotion sp. in South Africa: Hippotion celerio and Hippotion osiris. I can't separate them from a picture, however I would tend to Hippotion celerio, because Osiris has much stronger markings as Celerio. But for definitive exclusion of Osiris you would need to see the complete hindwings.

not overly confident of my ID - Hyles lavornica, but I had the caterpillars in my garden recently ( http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/168... )
