I bow to bayucca's superior knowledge, and I'm most happy as I now have an ID for another caterpillar from my garden which I shall be posting later

There are two Hippotion sp. in South Africa: Hippotion celerio and Hippotion osiris. I can't separate them from a picture, however I would tend to Hippotion celerio, because Osiris has much stronger markings as Celerio. But for definitive exclusion of Osiris you would need to see the complete hindwings.
