Northern Blacktailed Rattlesnake

Crotalus molossus molossus

Description:

Large, adult mountain-phase blacktailed rattlesnake, as they tend to look from this locale.

Notes:

As we started up the mountain to look for our target (banded rock rattlesnakes), we found a birder who had just seen the squirrel stagger out of the bushes and die. The three of us hung out and watched the snake find its kill, and then eat it over the course of an hour. A pretty amazing thing to see, and the best sighting of that day. (we did succeed in a few banded rocks, later)
