Great Barbet

Megalaima virens

Description:

A new year gift offered by nature. Saw this fellow sitting on a tree right outside our room at 8:00 am. In freezing cold I had shot the first pic without my shoes or socks on. He surely made 2013 more interesting. The great barbet is categorized as the largest barbet. The head and the pharynx are dark blue and may be seen as black. The mouth is big, the chest is dark brown, and the stomach is pale yellow with the line up spots which are dark green and greenish blue. The under tail is red, the back and the wing edge are dark greenish brown. The rest of upper part of the body is green.

Habitat:

Seen at 4000 feet ASL.

Notes:

The male's territorial call is a very loud kay-oh. The alarm is a harsh keeab, and another call is a repetitive piou-piou-piou-piou.
