Thats probably true. It is also possibly trying to scare you away by flashing its eye-spots.

Do they do this to absorb more sunlight and warmth? I can remember vaguely that day was quite warm in the sun.

Your welcome Gaia80. That is a very unique and cool image of the Wall brown - as it has shifted its hindwind and exposing more of the forewing bottom side.
