Northern Mockingbird

Mimus Polyglottos

Description:

A gray, slim songbird, about the size of a Robin, the Northern Mockingbird is aptly named because of their ability to mimic the calls of other species. Also known as the “American Nightingale,” it is a common bird of the suburbs, and is easily recognized by its long, intricate songs.

Habitat:

Wildlife habitat yard in North Texas.

Notes:

This bird was trying desperately to defend what it considered it's berries from the onslaught of a flock of Cedar Waxwings. It would dive into the one Yaupon to chase off the thieves, only to have the waxwings flit to the next tree a few feet away. When it went after them, the waxwings would dart back into the first holly. The poor bird was run ragged flying back and forth.
