A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Catochrysops strabo
A common butterfly throughout the island, especially at elevations below 3500 feet. It is seen throughout the year but is more common towards the end of monsoons in the dry zone of low mid elevations. Its habitat includes open fields, scrub jungle, forest paths, grass lands and hedges along fences in cultivated areas.
Both sexes are equally common and are encountered flying busily across open grounds, gardens or disused rice fields in the search of flowers. It flies fast, keeping to a few feet above ground and the males seldom settle on the ground frequently. It is a great basker, especially during early hours of the morning.
