Red-backed Salamander

Plethodon cinereus

Description:

Red-backed Salamanders can be found year round during mild winters throughout much of their range. I found this little guy under a log when it was about 50 degrees - but with lows as far down as 25 degrees only a few days ago. Very common in my area.

Habitat:

Under a moss covered log in a moist, bog-like area near a pond.

Notes:

I found 5 or 6 other Red-backed Salamanders of varying sizes in the same immediate area - some were only a little over 1cm long!
