I'm in sask and wasn't sure if I could grow chives. Guess I'll have to look up more about it. I think we're a zone 2 or 3 here.

WoodlandPotter has the correct ID and its good to see you update, you should also add the scientific name to the spotting to complete it.

no I didn't noticed any smells but it did look like an onion

Looks like Chives (Allium schoenoprasum).
