Great Blue Heron

Ardea herodias

Description:

The largest of the North American Herons. Long neck and legs. Thick bill that is grayish on top and yellowish-orange on bottom. Plumage mostly a bluish-gray with darker flight feathers. White on the face and head with a black stripe that extends into plumes on adult birds. Comes in a white morph and a less common intermediate morph (Wurdemann's Heron, seen more often in southern Florida).

Habitat:

Man-made freshwater lagoons.
