Buteo albicaudatus
Mostly white and grey with a few patches of black under the wings. These birds hover over an area, then move on not far and hover and repeats til it finds prey.Unlike hawks that soar over and then comes low on it's prey, the White-tailed Kite comes from above and dives straight down.
open fields and marshes. Can be found sometimes resting on poles and tall bushes.
This area had about 4 working the marsh and field but only two have the territory.
I knew that, I guess I was too tired and forgot. I was up til 2am posting days spottings. Did you see the seal? Not where it should be.
Nice series, Jellis! You have a white-tailed kite though, and not a hawk. We don't get these in CO, but we do get the Mississippi kite. Adorable!! I'd love this spotting (and your other raptor postings) in the Raptors of North America mission!
