Gulf frittilary

Agraulis vanillae

Description:

The butterflies had hatched out of their chrysalis recently, and the room was kind of cold, so that's why they stayed still.

Habitat:

A backyard habitat in the yard of a master gardener.

Notes:

The odd thing about these butterflies is they hatched this January. Most of the others like this stay in their chrysalis over the winter and hatch in spring. This was during a presentation about butterflies at Wilderness Wildlife Week.

They had just hatched recently and the room was kind of cold, which is why they stayed put.

I had the same thing happen with my Great Mormon butterflys.

Very nice! Every time I see a moth or butterfly they won't let me get close at all, I'm jealous of this!
