Bufflehead

Bucephala albeola

Description:

Males' heads appear black and white from a distance, but have green and purple hues as well when viewed up close. Females have a long white spot below the eye. Diving ducks, so they often disappear beneath the surface for a little while.

Habitat:

This one was on a small swimming lake next to the larger Pueblo Reservoir.

We saw quite a few of these today too! We walked in the rain for 4 hours and got 33 species, but it was worth it! I do love buffleheads.
