Sand dauber wasp

Family: Crabrinidae Tribe: Trypoxylonini

Description:

This small wasp was drowning in the dog's drinking bucket. While I carefully fished it out there was suddenly another one; and then a third. After putting a lid on the bucket I dabbed them all with a kitchen towel to suck the water off. About 12mm long.

Habitat:

Suburban back yard.

Notes:

Possibly of tribe Trypoxylonini (emarginated eyes). maybe Pison sp.? I have realised that when we put open drinking water for some animals we should always put a life-raft (a floating stick for example) so smaller creatures don't drown trying to get at the water. This is especially true for modern plastics, metal or ceramic containers which have slippery walls.
