Owl butterflies are very large, 65–200 mm (2.6–7.9 in), and fly only a few metres at a time commonly called owl butterflies, after their huge eyespots, which resemble owls' eyes.
This one was found on a tree trunk on the Essequibo River, Guyana and they are generally found in the rainforests and secondary forests of Mexico, Central, and South America.

Sorry, I mixed-up your location (Amathea ;-)...), but I am still sceptic...
This was In Guyana Bayucca, our naturalist said it was an owl eye so as he was Amerinidian and knew all other species I took his word for it! no other photos sorry i was hanging off a tree and taking this one handed as i was sat in a dug out canoe that didnt want to stay still!!
Caligo sor sure, but I am not sure if you can ID this one from a single shot and from this perspective without clearly seing the markings and without an open wing shot. Do you have some other pictures? Personally I am a little sceptic with Eurilochus. There are some others in Trinidad (Teucer, Illioneus, Brasiliensis).
