Common Musk Turtle

Sternotherus odoratus

Description:

This little turtle and/or his buddy stole my son's bait for hours before he was reeled in still greedily clinging to the worm (but not actually hooked). Only about 3.5-4" from the front to the back of his/her little black mossy shell. Either a musk turtle or a mud turtle???

Habitat:

Spotting at Cooper's Furnace Day Use Area at Allatoona Dam Cartersville, GA

I really don't remember :(
Wish I had taken more pics - I wa smore concerned with making sure my kids didn't manhandle him/her too badly before letting him go again...

Could be a musk or mud but the dome seems really high. Did you get a look at its head?
