Rove Beetles

Tribe Staphylinini

Description:

Black rove beetles with shiny, orange-brown elytra. 10-15mm long. Rove beetles are usually facultative predators, which means that they have a well-defined diet, but can also eat a broad range of prey. They also consume rotting vegetation and fungi. I'm not sure if the beetles in this spotting were mycophagous or if they were eating some tiny critters on the mushroom that I couldn't see.

Habitat:

I spotted three rove beetles on the gills of a very rotten mushroom in a mixed forest dominated by pine.

Notes:

I think they may be in the genus Platydracus, but am not sure.
