Xylobolus illudens
Growing flush to tree surface in more or less circular patterns 10-12 cm across. Dark purple in the center becoming pink near the edges then white on the margins. The tree is an alder with a 15 in. (38cm) dia. Though still standing the tree looked to be dead. It had plenty of woodpecker holes. The fungus was growing on the North side of the tree - away from direct sunlight.
Spotted in a mixed wooded forest near a stream.
This species is found on dead wood of a variety of plant species in a wide variety of habitats and fruit bodies generally appear in groups.
