Columba livia
The common pigeon was first described by Johann Friedrich Gmelin in 1789. The genus Columba is a Latinized form of the Ancient Greek κόλυμβος (kolumbos), "a diver", from κολυμβάω (kolumbao), "dive, dive head swim." Aristophanes (Birds, 304) and others use the word κολυμβίς (kolumbis), "diver" as the name of the bird, because of its movement in the air that is similar to swimming swims. The specific epithet is derived from the Latin livor, "bluish".
Woods; forests; urban centers
In my town (at least) is rare to see pigeons in rural areas, since they are concentrated in urban areas, where there are major source of food and shelter. These specimens were found in a plantation.
