Neotropical Whipsnake

Masticophis mentovarius

Description:

About 30cm long juvenile. Grey/brown colouration with pale markings (these tend to disappear in adults). Threatening display includes forming S-shape and pretending to strike with wide open mouth. They are not dangerous to humans! Adult can grow to considerable lengths over 2m.

Habitat:

Semi-arid region in central Mexico during rainy season.

Notes:

Some consider the name Masticophis a synonym for Coluber.

Thanks! Snake are a bit of a rare find here. They do exist but only seldomly show themselves.
