Found growing beneath a pile of wet rugs in my back yard
It's not a Jew's ear but I can see the resemblance. No idea what it is though.

Looks like the Jew's Ear (Auricularia Auricula-Judae), but that is a saprophyte fungus... it doesn't grow on rugs. Look for any traces of wood splinters or dead wood, if you find some, it might be this kind of fungus.
