Rounded Palm-redeye Butterfly

Erionota torus

Description:

Brown butterfly. Drab when it sits with its wings folded but when it flew away I saw black patches.Red eyes.

Habitat:

I almost stepped on it as it sat on the coir mat on the floor of the dining hall in a cardamom estate in Munnar, Kerala, India. I nudged it out of the door whereupon it went and sat on the cemented path where there was a puddle and it drank some water. Then it flew to the trunk of a tree and sat with folded wings for almost two hours...and I never got a shot with its wings open.

Thank you Jellis. I would not have thought this one was a skipper butterfly as it was quite large. However, I see it is also called Giant skipper. I also was not very hopeful about getting an ID since I did not get a shot with its wings open...I should have had more faith in my friends on PN...:) Many thanks, once again.
